Story
Locomotive 1021 was built by Manning Wardle and Company as works number 1896, to the order of the Public Works Department of New South Wales. Entering service in December 1916, the locomotive was given the number 59, and along with 5 others, was engaged in railway construction work. It is believed that it saw service in the construction of sections of the North Coast line. Following transfer of all railway construction to the NSWGR in 1917, the locomotive was given the road number 1212 and at the 1924 re-numbering, was placed in the X10 class, gaining the number 1021. Over the years 1021, the only one of the six surviving into NSWGR ownership, was placed in shunting service at a series of depots. The locomotive was withdrawn from Cardiff and set aside in October 1970. Following transfer to the New South Wales Rail Transport Museum in the following November, 1021 finally arrived at Thirlmere in 1975. It has since been painted royal blue as the Cardiff shunter, replicating the livery used for a period at Cardiff Workshops.
