Story

Probably the best locomotive of the former Austrian Southern Railway (Südbahn - SB) and a mile stone in locomotive construction. Hans Steffan and Ernst Prossy developed her specifically for the line Ljubljana - Trieste. Her appearance was referred to as utilitarian severe and of stark beauty. The peak performance reached on trials in 1910 was 1547 HP (!) and the top speed 128 km/h. The class came into service also on other lines of the Südbahn in Austria and Hungary. Altogether 57 of them were built by StEG, WLF Floridsdorf and Budapest. There are two more locomotives of this class existing today: the Austrian 109.13 and the Hungarian 109.109 and all three are in working order.
