6 - Irish Mail details on steamloco.info

Story

The engine worked at the Dinorwic slate quarries in North Wales. It was named after a racehorse belonging to the quarry owners, and was one of the few quarry locos built with a cab. It was brought down to the quarry workshop in the 1950s, and dismantled down to the frames. It remained in the yard until the quarry closed in 1969. The Railway purchased Irish Mail at an auction and restored it over a ten-year period. The loco entered service at Hesketh Bank in 1981. Ownership is now with the West Lancashire Locomotive Trust.
