Story

The NS 8811was first numbered WD 5080 and built by Hudswell Clarke & Co in Leeds in 1943. It was used in England up to the invasion of Normandy. In 1945 the locomotive ended up in Holland, having been renumbered 75080. On 20th August 1945 it was made available to the Dutch railways together with 26 others of its type. A definite purchase followed in 1947 and it entered service as No. 8811. Its original khaki colour was replaced by NS green with black frames and red buffer beams. Until 1950, NS 8811 was based in Nijmegen, then spent a year in Venlo depot and from August 1951 it steamed daily through Rotterdam. Its new home base was Feijenoord depot. On 12th February 1953 the engine was sold to the Maatschappij tot Exploitatie der Steenkolenmijnen Laura & Vereeniging NV at Eygelshoven where it carried a No IV in the Julia mine. Later it was renumbered LV 13 based on the boiler. The engine remained in service here until 1975. Quite by accident the engine was discovered in 1981 by a group of young SSN volunteers on the day it was pulled out of a shed to be scrapped.
